Design and Technology

Design and Technology (DT) helps build on essential life skills in a fun and engaging way. Here at FCJ, there is a carefully-planned curriculum which enables all children to develop their skills within this subject.  The children are extremely lucky to complete their lessons in our wonderfully-equipped craft room, where we have a large range of quality resources which enables the children to produce work to a high standard and ensure they reach their full potential.

Design and Technology helps children develop different skills compared to other subjects. This subject encourages them to become creative problem solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team.

In KS1 they develop their knowledge of the 4 key areas which are: textiles, structures, mechanisms and nutrition. In KS2 they build upon these key skills and also learn about  electrical systems and CAD (computer aided design.  Through cross-curricular links, children are able to build on Maths and English skills to create a final project. The children focus on planning, designing, creating and evaluating their products. They analyse their final piece and re-create their project after critiquing it. Children research their ideas and develop a greater awareness and understanding of how everyday products are designed and made. A variety of experiences teaches children to appreciate that all people, and their views, are equally important.

We have some fantastic designers here at FCJ. Each year we take part in the Primary Engineer competition: ‘If you were an engineer what would you do?’, and have been very successful.  We also have also entered the Jersey Eisteddfod this year with textiles work from Year 3 to Year 6.
